Magsafe provides a new approach to safety gate
interlocking and access control solutions. Magsafe offers a combination of safety
innovation and cost effective design. An electro-magnetic locking interlock system for
controlling personnel access through the gates and doors set within the perimeter safety
fencing or screens surrounding potentially hazadous machinery. The Magsafe magnetic safety
gate interlocks provide interlocking and access control for a wide range of applications
in the food & drinks, automotive, buildings materials, paper industries and many
others.
The key design element in Magsafe was to lock the door using magnetic force rather than by
mechanical means and to remove the problems that plague existing gate locks due to liquid
and dirt exposure in combination with the rigors of daily operation. This causes fatigue
and leads to mechanical failue of the product.
New
Magsafe now offers the ability to monitor up to 2
magnets from a single low cost (DIN rail mount) Control Unit or the system can be extended by connecting Extender Modules (DIN rail mount) to allow for up to 8 monitored magnets on one system. The new Magsafe system provides even
greater flexibility in safety gate/access control design.
This facility makes it ideal for the great
majority of work cells, typically with 1 or 2 safety gates/doors providing access through
the perimeter safety fencing to a dangerous machine. Magsafe's innovative design allows it
to be both flexible and user friendly whilst still offering the customer an ideal low cost
safety gate interlocking solution.
Magsafe incorporates a number of innovative customer driven design features including:
- Using safety light curtain technology which continuously monitors the on and off state
of the magnets. This ensures the system detects a gate open or closed condition.
- Using magnetic force rather than mechanical removes the problems that plague existing
gate locks due to liquid and dirt exposure, which in combination with the rigors of daily
operation causes fatigue and leads to mechanical failure.
- E-Stop relay included reduces overall cost of installation.

Overview
A typical system comprises of electromagnetic gate locks, control unit / extender module(s), local access
control unit and connection cables. The Control Unit contains all the control electronics for the Magsafe system including run-dowm timers for gate release, E-Stop inputs, External Device Monitoring (EDM), connection for up to 2 monitored magnets, LED output display with output signals for driving a PLC input and dual channel safety output relay contacts. In addition it provides connection for the Extender Modules which allow up to 1 or 2 magnets per Extender Module. Up to 3 Extender Modules can be added allowing for a total of 8 monitored magnets on a single system.
The control system provides up to EN 954-1, Category 4, EN ISO 13849-1, PL e and EN 61508, SIL 3 safety integrity, ensuring
suitability for the majority of machine safety applications. Magnets are available in 2 material
options, nickel plated steel and stainless steel, ideal for use in food, drinks and other similar
applications. They are also available in 2 sizes, 63mm and 38mm Diameter. The magnets
provide a holding force up to 500 N per magnet (model dependant). 3m and 10m cable options
are available for magnet to control box connection. A Local Access Controller is also
available providing a traffic light entry condition indication for the operator driven by the run down timer. The Local Access Controller has 5m and 10m cable lengths. Alternatively the user has the option to configure their own access control interface.
